In 1782 King Rama 1 moved the Thai Capital from Ayuthaya to the banks of the Choaphraya river. At the time this area was occupied by Chinese immigrants. This area is where the Grand Palace is now located and the Chinese were inevitably moved to a strip of land 2 kilometers down river. Today China Town occupies a little over two square kilometers, making it the oldest district in the city. You'll still see the old buildings and architecture and you still smell the Chinese tradition all around. Jim Thompson's House

Jim Thompson worked for the United States Government during the second world war after which he settled in Bangkok for the remaining 25 years of his life. During this time he become the founder of the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. Jim Thompson's house, which also housed his weaving factory, consists of 6 traditional Thai-style houses purchased from several owners to the present architecture from various parts of Thailand. The Thai house was completed in 1959. During his time in Thailand, Kim Thompson traveled south-east Asia collecting art from several different countries in the region. Today the house with his art collection has been declared a museum and has become one of the top historical sites in Bangkok for tourists to visit.
